ICD-10-GM - History and outlook

ICD-10-GM is a version of ICD-10-WHO adapted to the specific requirements of the German health care system and is continuously developed. The Alphabetical Index to ICD-10-GM has developed from the ICD diagnostic thesaurus of the Central Research Institute of Ambulatory Health Care in Germany (Zi). It is adapted according to the changes to the Tabular List.

This overview shows the periods of validity and areas of application for different versions of ICD-10-GM; in addition, it may also contain a reference to the publication in the Federal Gazette of the date that the version became effective.

Continuous development and improvement of ICD-10-GM

ICD-10-GM is continuously refined in accordance with the requirements of its application. At present, a new version is published annually. Updating is based on the rules of procedure for the provision of ICD-10-GM and OPS according to § 295 paragraph 1 sentence 9 and § 301 paragraph 2 sentence 7 SGB V. To enable this process a national proposal procedure is conducted, directed by BfArM, up to 2019 under consideration of updates of ICD-10 of WHO.

No further development of ICD-10 of WHO from 2019 on

ICD-10-WHO adaptation

ICD-10-GM is a version of ICD-10-WHO adapted to the specific requirements of the German health care system; until and including 2003, it was known as ICD-10-SBG-V. The adaptation took place in two steps; compatibility with ICD-10-WHO was maintained.

ICD-10 Thesaurus of diagnostic terms (IDT)

The Alphabetical Index to ICD-10-GM has developed from ICD Thesaurus of diagnostic terms of the Central Research Institute of Ambulatory Health Care in Germany (ZI). Each year, it is adapted in accordance to the changes to the Tabular Index.
